Reds Stymie Pittsburgh, Take 3-1 Win
|
In a low-scoring clash between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, pitcher Roger Erickson was a difference-maker. The right-hander earned player of the game honors for Cincinnati in the 3-1 win. Erickson picked up the win for Cincinnati, going 8 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 10-19. Billy McCool was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 29 of 32 save opportunities.
The Reds got a big at-bat from catcher Johnny Bench. For the game, Bench went 2-4 with 2 singles. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 136th hit of the season gave Cincinnati a 2-1 lead.
Bench said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
