Cincinnati beat Chicago on the strength of starter Ron Reed's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 5-3. Reed went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 14-10. The Reds now have a record of 89-67 with the win over Chicago.

With the game tied, 3-3, in the top of the sixth, Reed had a key at-bat for Cincinnati. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Reed, who finished 4th in the NL in ERA with 2.37 last year, hit a run-scoring single off Manny Lara, making the score 4-3, Reds.

Reed told the Cincinnati Chronicle: "I don't know which I enjoy more -- being a ballplayer or the perks that come with being a ballplayer."
