If the California Angels were expecting the pressure of the playoffs to get to Jack Sanford, they underestimated the old man.

The Chicago Cubs got a strong start from the 37-year-old right-hander. Sanford threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball as Chicago won the contest 4-1 at Wrigley Field to take the lead in their best-of-7 series with the Angels. The Cubs now lead 1-0.

Billy Williams, who finished 4th in the NL in RBI with 105 in 1964, chipped in for Chicago with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third. For the game, the left fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 4 runs batted in.

"Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Sanford after the game.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
