Cardinals Rebuff Cubs, 3-1
|
In a low-scoring affair between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Bill Butland was the difference between victory and defeat. The St. Louis right-hander earned kudos in the 3-1 Cardinals win. Butland got the win, improving to 5-4. He gave up 6 hits and walked 0 over 6.2 innings. He allowed 1 run. Getting the save was Aurelio Monteagudo, his 13th.
The game was on the line with two out in the top of the eighth inning, but Billy Koch didn't flinch. With runners on 1st and 3rd and Chicago trailing 2-1, Koch retired Pedro Alvarez to end the threat. "Nothing to it," said Koch, with a wink.
With the win, the Cardinals have a record of 36-33.
