Whitecaps Shut Out Dash, Underwood Winner
Tom Underwood of the West Michigan Whitecaps was on top of his game.

The 22-year-old tantalized the Winston-Salem Dash with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.

"He had the changeup working," Winston-Salem manager Seth Greisinger said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The West Michigan hurler had 8 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.

Underwood told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

To date this year, Underwood shows a 9-7 record, 23 starts, 121 innings, 109 strikeouts and a 3.05 ERA.
