Pittsburgh beat San Francisco on the strength of starting pitcher Esteban Loaiza's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 5-3. The winner was Loaiza. He threw 6.0 innings allowing 1 run. The loser was Framber Valdez. The setback makes San Francisco 19-41.

Nick Castellanos had a big run-scoring double for the Pirates in the bottom of the first inning. With Pittsburgh leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a slider from 30-year old left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez and swatted a double to center. It was his 21st double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Pirates ahead, 2-0.

Castellanos called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
