Reds Edge Past Phillies, 5-4
|
In the 5-4 Cincinnati win over Philadelphia, the impact of Danny Thomas was substantial. Thomas, who led the NL in batting average with .354 in 2053, went 3 for 4 with 3 singles. Drew Roberts earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2.1 innings. His record is now 1-0. Bill Ladd earned the save for Cincinnati, his 2nd of the year.
Valencia, Venezuela-born Remo Carone came through in the clutch. In the top of the eighth, with the bases loaded and the Reds trailing 4-3, he hit a 2-run single to center to put Cincinnati on top.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Carone said.
Philadelphia, with the loss, is still a hardy 3-1.
