CBA Hot Stove Action

Something has our league all antsy and the stove has been hot all day so lets take a look at the teams making moves and the players in and out the door.

New York Roar

Going Out: David Ruiz (YA) To CIN, Tom Jarvis (YA) and Ben Dickerson (Dev-B) To CHI

Coming In: Danny Mignone (RES) and Corey Arrigone (RES) From CHI, Bobby Ramsey From CIN

In this writers humble opinion the Roar stole Ramsey from Cincy. Ramsey has been one of the better pitchers in the CBA and it looks like Cincy swapped him for magic beans. Mignone is a very good defensive catcher who shouldn’t have trouble finding PT down the line. Arrigone looks to be a career minor leaguer so lets call him organizational depth. Dickerson, Jarvis and Ruiz are all much to young to know whether or not they will be big league contributors but right now they look fringe at best. One very savvy move by NY to get Ramsey in a pitching deprived CBA

Chicago Gale

Coming In: Marcos Gordillo (On loan From MEX) and Tom Jarvis (YA) Ben Dickerson (DEV-B) From NY

Going Out: 2022 2nd Round Pick To MEX, Danny Mignone (RES), and Corey Arrigoni (RES)

This is a move out of necessity. Starting second baseman Victor Solano broke his hand and is done for most if not all of the season. Marcos Gordillo was Mexico City’s backup second baseman and he should immediately fill that void and help with hitting lefties. A 2nd rounder is not much for the win now Gale to give up for finding a suitable replacement in a pinch. Jarvis and Dickerson look to be fringe talent but still have time to develop. Chicago and NY must know something I don’t that makes that deal worth doing

Detroit Motors

Going Out: 2022 5th Round 2023 2nd Round 1B Tommy Mawyer (Res) OF Jessie Drace (Res) To SAC

Coming In: 2022 1st Round Pick From SAC

At a glance this single trade looks lopsided. A lot of times trading picks is all about known value and in this case Sacramento is getting all of that. Mawyer is either a strikeout a double or a home run not really any other options. Drace is a solid fielding back up outfielder and pinch runner but not anything else if that. But if this pick turns into a top 10 pick and Detroit only gave up 2 reserve players and some later draft picks to get it they got a steal. But until we know how the season unfolds Sacramento wins this deal.

Sacramento Golden Bears

Going Out: 2022 1st Round Pick To DET

Coming In: 2022 5th Round 2023 2nd Round 1B Tommy Mawyer (Res) OF Jessie Drace (Res) From DET

The Golden Bears need hitting simple as that. They hope they found it in the 35 year old Mawyer. If things work out the way they want then that second pick will fall well out of the top 10 and they come out with a run producing contribute and multiple other picks that they can either use to pick players or more likely as trade chips. Right now they win this deal going away but if this doesn’t help the situation and they end up trading a pick worth a franchise changing player then this could be a trade we look back on and wonder what were they thinking.

Cincinnati Royals

Going Out: 2023 1st To MIA and 2023 2nd Round Pick,Bobby Ramsey To NYR, 1B Joe Payne To MEX

Coming In: Paul Folk (3 Year Loan) From MIA, 2022 2nd Rounder and 2023 1st Rounder From MEX

The Ramsey move baffles me. Ramsey has been well above average with a sub three ERA whcih hasn’t translated to the win column but that hasn’t been his fault. Moving him for a youth academy player just doesn’t make much sense. They got back the 1st rounder in 2023 they sent to Miami and added a second rounder this season. They also added 2B Paul Folk from Miami, a first rounder may have been a bit of a stretch here but Folk is slashing a .287/.372/.456 thus far this season and getting 2 and a half seasons of control on the 21 year old was a good move. They unloaded the aging Joe Payne who is on his 3rd team of the year and a 2023 2nd round pick to Mexico City for multiple picks coming back. To me these both look like solid moves, can’t tell if they are win now mode or planning for the future but something tells me they don’t know either. Whichever way they end up going these moves won’t hurt them.

Miami Warriors

Going Out: Juan Alejo (On loan To MEX), 2B Paul Folk (On loan To CIN)

Coming In: 2022 2nd and 5th round From Mex, 2023 1st Round From CIN

Two loans going out with picks coming out, these are both low risk high reward moves for Miami. Miami as we all know started inauspiciously as they are on their third GM this Inaugural season and while in limbo the amateur draft took place in which they had four first round selections. Which the interm front office wasted on 4 relief pitchers. So Miami is playing catch up and are stockpiling picks while sending players away while the team has time to develop and rebuild and hopefully be ready to roll upon the loaned out players returns.

Mexico City Chupacabras

Going Out: Marcos Gordillo (On loan To CHI), 2022 2nd Round 2023 1st Round To CIN, 2022 3rd and 5th To MIA

Coming In: 1B Juan Alejo (On loan From MIA), 2022 2nd Round From CHI,  1B Joe Payne and 2023 2nd Round From CIN

The Alejo and Payne moves are panic moves simple as that Payne is a 37 year old DH to replace the injured Andy de la Paz who ruptured his achilles this past week. Alejo will play first while Payne DHs. Also picking upt 2 second round picks one each in the upcoming years. Alejo will only be there till the end of the season then he is back to Miami. This keeps Mexico City in silver league contention after losing their best hitter de la Paz and stocks up early round picks for the upcoming draft. The Gordillo loan doesn’t hurt the team as they have another backup infielder in Robby Ramirez who does the same thing.

So there it is and these are only the deals that have been announced, but almost more intriguing is the rumor mill which has been abuzz today. Some quick points on these rumors:

DC Eagles Shopping John “Moondog” Wagner on loan

Cincinnati Looking to move SS Sayre

Detroit Looking to Move an Outfielder

Sacramento Looking for a SS

Florida Giants Shopping everyone under the sun in their system

I’m sure more moves will be made and when they do, know that I’ll be here to talk about them
