Comets Best Caribou in Pitching Duel
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Comet Field, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2049 Great Lakes Baseball League season. On the mound was Yakumo Hasegawa for the visiting Thunder Bay Caribou and Fernando Markert for the hometown Kingston Comets. In a spirited contest, the Comets pulled out the win, defeating the Caribou by the score of 1-0. Especially impressive was Fernando Markert. Markert, the winner, moves to 1-0. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 3 and giving up 1 walk.
The Comets got a big at-bat from left fielder Miguel Santiago. For the game, Santiago was 1 for 3 with a home run. In the bottom of the second, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Kingston a 1-0 lead.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Santiago. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
