On Road, Batavia Drops Vermont, 7-4
|
Vermont designated hitter Joe Barko had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Barko was 2-4 with a home run. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2, even as Batavia beat the Lake Monsters, 7-4. The winner was Tim Mitchell, who threw 73 pitches over 5.2 innings. The right-hander was charged with 3 runs on 6 hits. Randy Wheeler saved it for Batavia.
It could have been a different outcome for Batavia, had it not been for Chris Whitaker, the 21-year old shortstop . Whitaker contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to put Batavia up, 1-0.
"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Whitaker said.
The Muckdogs, at 32-12, lead by one game in their division.
