Mike Brimer, who is tied for 9th in the AL in quality starts with 18, was locked in. The left-hander led the New York Yankees to a 5-3 win against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium. Jim Berryman closed the game out for New York, earning his 35th save. The first-place Yankees, at 84-67, now lead their division by 3½ games.

Juan Contreras had a big solo home run for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth inning. With New York leading 3-2 and the bases empty, he sized up a fastball from Chris Thelen, who is tied for 7th in the AL with a 3.34 ERA, and punished it. The result was his 39th home run of the season, which put the Yankees on top, 4-2.

"Mike is a gamer," said New York manager Angel Santos.
