The Cincinnati Reds powered past the Texas Rangers, 8-4, at Great American Ball Park. Luis Mercado provided some of the pop. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. Mike Madar got the win, improving to 12-9. He held the Rangers to 2 runs on 5 hits over 5.2 innings, while striking out 2 and walking 1. Cincinnati is third in the American League South Division with a record of 81-76.
Eric Clark had a big bases-clearing triple for the Reds in the bottom of the first inning. With Cincinnati leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a sinker from T.J. Secore, who is tied for 5th in the AL in complete games with 2, and swatted a triple to left-center. It was his 6th triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Reds ahead, 4-0.
"I put some good swings on the ball," said Mercado.
