The Portland Pioneers and Boston Red Sox put on a pitchers' duel.
Portland rode a good effort from starter Bobby Van den Akker to beat the Boston Red Sox at Columbia Sportswear Park. The final score was 2-0. Van den Akker got the win, improving to 6-8. He allowed 4 hits and walked 1 over 5.2 innings. Van den Akker allowed no runs. Steve Benfield, credited with the save, is now 19 for 24 in save opportunities.
Tony Stroud chipped in for Portland with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the left fielder had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.
