The 2023 season did not get off to quite the start the State College Spikes had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Auburn Doubledays at Dwyer Stadium. The final score was 3-2. Starting Pitcher Verdiano Duccio was the top performer for Auburn. In 7.1 innings, Duccio surrendered 9 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs.
Connor Robinson, the 19-year old third baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Robinson contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the fourth inning to put Auburn up, 3-0.
State College manager Chad Kreuter said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
