Columbia Fireflies manager Dick Schofield knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 23-year-old right-hander Dylan Smith silenced the host Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium today. The Fireflies shut out the GreenJackets by a final score of 5-0, to give the Fireflies a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Round 1.

The game could have flipped with no one out in the bottom of the sixth. But Dylan Smith made what his manager later called "an A-plus pitch." With runners on 1st and 2nd and Augusta trailing 4-0, Smith threw a changeup to Vince Chase and Chase struck out.

The next game is set to be played for Sunday, September 10th , 2023 at Spirit Communications Park in Columbia.
