The High Desert Mavericks got a strong performance from pitcher Masakazu Hirayama, who stymied the Inland Empire offense en route to a win, 3-1, at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. Getting the save was Brent Humphrey, his 12th. The first-place Mavericks go to 26-14.
High Desert used the clutch hitting of Max Gilliam to capture the win. The center fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Mavericks the lead, 2-1. For the game, Gilliam had 2 singles and 1 double in 5 at-bats.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Hirayama said.
