Cubs Take Nail-Biter Over Mariners
|
The Chicago Cubs topped the Seattle Mariners, 6-5, in National League action at Wrigley Field. The standout performance belonged to Chicago pitcher and Des Plaines, Illinois, native Ryan Copeland. The winner was Chicago reliever Craig Missigman, now 1-0. The loser was Blaine Knight. Losses have been rare for the Mariners, who are now 9-4.
The Cubs relied on center fielder Byron Buxton for the game-winning hit. And, in the bottom of the 13th, he delivered, hitting a run-scoring single to seal the deal.
In postgame comments to the Chicago Citizen, Buxton said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
