The Peoria Chiefs took Cedar Rapids pitcher Cole Kirschsieper's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The final score had Peoria getting past the Kernels, 5-2. Kirschsieper went 5.2 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 4. Peoria reliever Anastasio Vargas picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Jack Dickerson took the loss. Jason Yates was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 23 of 31 save opportunities.
Peoria used the timely hitting of Greg Simpson to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Chiefs ahead, 4-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Simpson. "And not try to do too much."
With the win, Peoria upped its record to 60-49.
