Tight Tilt Goes to Rays, 3-2
|
The Tampa Bay Rays downed the Boston Red Sox, 3-2. The hitting star was designated hitter Lonnie Willard. Willard was 2 for 3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Rays. Tampa Bay reliever Baude Miller got the win, raising his record to 2-0. Ánibal Santos was tagged with the loss. Ernie Newman recorded his 14th save for Tampa Bay.
Willard contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Tampa Bay in the bottom of the fourth. With his team trailing 1-0, Willard took a fastball from Ánibal Santos and stroked the home run to left-center. His 6th home run of the season allowed the Rays to leap in front, 2-1.
In postgame comments to the Tampa Bay News, Willard said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
Tampa Bay is now 20-13, 2½ games up in the American League Southern Division.
