The Detroit Tigers topped the Minnesota Twins, 5-3, in American League action at Target Field. The standout performance belonged to Detroit designated hitter and Hobe Sound, Florida, native Zane Gilbert. Detroit reliever Tex Buck picked up the win, upping his record to 7-3. Brad Calhoun shouldered the loss. Víctor Martínez earned the save for Detroit, his 10th of the year.

Detroit used the clutch hitting of Kelly Álvarez to capture the win. The pinch hitter drilled a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Tigers ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a big one.

"We're feeling good in this clubhouse right now after that one," Álvarez told the Detroit Daily.

The third-place Tigers raised their record to 72-71.
