The St. Louis Cardinals got a good effort from starter Millard Valdéz in defeating the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium. The final score was 5-2. Valdéz went 5.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. His record improves to 6-0. With the win, St. Louis upped its record to 22-22.

The Cardinals got an important contribution from right fielder Jeremy Dalton, who in the bottom of the third punched a 2-1 curveball into right-center for a 2-run home run. It was his 11th home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 4-0.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Dalton.
