The inspired effort of Minnesota third baseman Edgar Martínez was not enough to prevent a 6-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Martínez was 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. Jian-guo Shao picked up the win with 5 innings of work. He allowed 4 earned runs on 8 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 3. On the season, he is now 12-7. Frank Zeringue converted his 27th save in 32 tries.
Iván Otero was 1-3 with a double and was hit by a pitch, while adding 2 RBI for Chicago. The 26-year old left fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring hit-by-pitch off Ed Brown. It was his 73rd RBI of the season.
"I still think this team has room for improvement," Otero told the Chicago Herald.
The first-place White Sox have their sights set on making a deep playoff run.
