Victory Over Blue Jays Takes New York to 104-56
|
The New York Yankees racked up a win at New Yankee Stadium, bumping off the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-0. Alberto Fontanez, who started for New York, pitched effectively for his team. Fontanez went 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. His record improves to 17-6. The first-place Yankees, at 104-56, now lead their division by 20 games.
New York catcher Félix Gómez had a key at-bat for the Yankees in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing right-hander Natsuo Tsukamoto, Gómez hit a grand slam. It put New York in front, 6-0. For the day, Gómez was 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.
"We take it day by day here," said Gómez, "and today was a good one for us."
