Barton, Houston Start Divisional Strong with Home Win

The Houston Astros got a great start from 36-year-old left-hander Norris Barton, who earned player of the game honors today as Houston won the contest 7-3 at Minute Maid Park. Barton threw 5 innings of 4-hit ball in the win, which allowed the Houston to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series.

Houston grabbed control in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Paul MacLean delivered a 3-run home run, to make it 5-2 in favor of the Astros.

"It's true for every sport, I think, but the playoffs are so short that you've just got to get in and get hot," Houston manager Bradley Clarkson told BNN after the win. "We took care of the first part and now we're just working on the second."

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow in Houston. Slated to start are Kevin López for the Colorado Rockies and Barry Collins for the the Houston Astros.
