Cubs Need Extra Frames to Get Past Astros
|
The Chicago Cubs faced a tenacious opponent in Houston pitcher Hugo Venegas, but still scratched out a win at Minute Maid Park by a final score of 3-1 in 10 innings. Venegas went 5.1 innings and allowed no runs. The win belonged to David Janes in relief. His record improves to 3-0. Jimmy Shead took the loss for Houston. Tanner Heath picked up his 13th save of the season.
Chicago right fielder Juan Castoreno delivered a 2-run home run in the top of the tenth. Overall, he went 3 for 5, picking up 1 home run, 1 single, and 1 double. He scored 1 run and knocked in 2.
During his postgame press conference, Cubs manager Jon Richardson told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
Chicago raised its record to 32-21 with the win.
