Conditions were not ideal but Vallejo and Bloomington were able to put their game in the books.
The Bloomington Big Stick got a superb performance from pitcher Dane Williams, but the Vallejo E-40's still won the game, 2-1. Williams threw 5.1 innings of 1-hit ball. The win was credited to 21-year old left-handed pitcher Steve Lucas in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Miguel Angel González took the loss. Joe Mathews was credited with the save for Vallejo, his 5th of the season.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Devin Howell came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Bloomington pitcher Miguel Angel González, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Vallejo on top, 2-1.
Howell told the Vallejo Citizen: "I was born for the big stage."
Vallejo is now 29-32, Bloomington 34-27.
