The Montgomery Mammoths took on the Newport Railroaders at Pandora Grounds.

The Montgomery Mammoths topped the Newport Railroaders, 7-4, the lion's share of the credit going to first baseman Jake Welch. On the day, Welch was 2 for 4 with a home run and was hit by a pitch, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Mammoths. Curt Carey, now 1-1, was credited with the win in 1 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0.

Welch had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a first pitch fastball from Bob Smith, he banged a grand slam home run to right-center, giving the Mammoths a 7-4 lead. It was the 3rd home run of the year for Welch.

"I like winning," Welch told the Montgomery Gazette. "I may joke around, but when it comes down to it, winning is the most important thing."

Montgomery, with the win, is 16-38.
