Nationals Use Late Surge to Win
|
Washington and New York got after it at Wilpon Memorial Park.
Washington turned a good performance from starting pitcher Tommy Morse into a 3-2 triumph over the New York Mets in 12 innings at Wilpon Memorial Park. The win was credited to former first round draft pick Jim O'Neill in relief. His record improves to 1-2. Steve Pate took the loss.
José Gonzáles had a direct impact on the outcome. Gonzáles contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put Washington up, 3-2.
During his postgame press conference, Nationals manager Zack H told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
With the win, Washington upped its record to 53-29.
