Submarines Show No Mercy in 9-0 Thrashing of Beachcombers
|
The Santa Cruz Beachcombers were almost helpless today in their 9-0 loss to the Willard Submarines and hurler Gerald Ford. Ford kept the Beachcombers confused all game, spinning a 5-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Ford," Santa Cruz manager Hank Wyse said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 21-year-old right-hander had no walks and 9 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Ford said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
This season Ford has compiled a 7-2 record with a 2.86 ERA in 10 starts.
