Santa Cruz Hopeless Against Hughes
Friday, August 4th , 1972
Before the game, Tim Hughes said he liked his chances. His instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing at Beachcombers Field, the Roughnecks pitcher blanked the Santa Cruz Beachcombers 4-0.

"I just had a feeling it was going to be my day," Hughes said in the clubhouse afterward. "My control was awesome. I could throw my changeup even when I was behind in the count."

The Beaumont starter held Santa Cruz scoreless, giving up 5 hits while registering no strikeouts and issuing 2 walks.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," Beachcombers manager Hank Wyse said in a postgame interview. "When that happens, you usually lose."

In 21 starts this season Hughes has gathered 9 wins while suffering 7 losses. He has pitched 131.2 innings, allowed 132 hits, struck out 114 and has a 3.76 ERA.
