The bat of B J Surhoff helped the Cincinnati Reds top the Florida Marlins, 5-4. Surhoff went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs for Cincinnati. Luis Baez earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings. His record is now 2-0. Now 8-13, the Marlins have gotten off to a poor start.
Luis Castillo, who is tied for 4th in the NL in bases on balls with 15, helped out the Cincinnati cause in the bottom of the seventh inning with a run-scoring double. For the game, the second baseman was 3-4 with a double and 2 singles.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Florida manager Kevin Jones.
