The 9-6 New York win over Atlanta was due largely to Robin Ventura. The Mets first baseman went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. New York reliever Chuck McElroy picked up the win, upping his record to 4-2. Chad Plonk took the loss. Getting the save was Gary Cameron, his 1st.

New York used the timely hitting of Jay Canizaro to capture the win. The designated hitter socked a 3-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Mets ahead, 9-6. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a big one.

"I feel honored to be a part of this team," said Ventura.

The Mets now own a record of 72-38.
