The Boston Red Sox topped the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, in AL action at Tiger Stadium. The game was highlighted by the performance of Boston pitcher Mark Gubicza. Gubicza went 6.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. His record improves to 9-0. Gregg Olson earned the save for Boston, his 11th of the year.

Boston used the timely hitting of Sean Fric to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Red Sox on top, 5-2. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Fric.

With this game in the books, Boston is 27-19, Detroit 22-24.
