The Pittsburgh Pirates got a complete game effort from starter Dock Ellis to move into a 2-2 tie with the St. Louis Cardinals in the best-of-7 League Championship.

The Pittsburgh right-hander went the distance at Busch Stadium II, cooling off the St. Louis Cardinals and striking out 6 to help Pittsburgh take the 1-0 win that knotted the series.

Ellis was in the zone all game. He frustrated St. Louis hitters while giving the Pirates 9 innings of quality work. Ellis threw 136 pitches, allowing 3 hits and getting 6 punchouts.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Ellis said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

Game 5 is scheduled for tomorrow at Busch Stadium II in St. Louis. Slated to start are Bob Veale for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Dave Giusti for the the St. Louis Cardinals.
