Yankees Crowned Kings of the AL American League East Friday, September 19th , 1997 Let loose, New York fans, your team has won the AL American League East. The New York Yankees have officially captured the crown, the 36th in franchise history. "We've got a team that can do it all and we think do it just as well as anyone in the league," said starting pitcher Chris Carpenter. "I hope no one is taking us lightly once the playoffs start." Certainly the team's division crown will garner them a fair bit of respect, as the 95-54 record puts the club in position for the franchise's 21st Replay Baseball League championship.
