Fans of the New York Mets who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a New York win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3. J.R. Richard started for the home team against Billy Hoeft. Billy Hoeft earned accolades for his performance.

Bobby Bonilla was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets first baseman hit a dramatic solo home run to send the teams home.

"Our goal is to improve each and every day," Bonilla told the New York Daily News.
