Floundering Cardinals Lose 6th Straight
The Philadelphia Phillies got a magnificent effort from pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, who kept St. Louis hitters in check en route to a 1-0 Phillies win at Citizens Bank Park. Valenzuela went the distance for Philadelphia. He gave up no runs on 2 hits. St. Louis, now 2-10, continues its dreadful start.

In the bottom of the ninth, with two out and the game tied, 0-0, center fielder Richie Ashburn won it for Philadelphia. With a runner on 3rd, Ashburn hit a 1-1 fastball from Ron Davis for a run-scoring single, giving his team the 1-0 win.

"Great to get the crowd on its feet," Valenzuela said.
