Big Day at the Plate for Shafer Not Enough for Cubs
The San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs completed their game despite the rain.

The San Francisco Giants withstood an impressive performance by Chicago first baseman Tillie Shafer to defeat the Cubs, 9-6, at Wrigley Field. Shafer went 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. San Francisco reliever Eddie Smith was the winner. His record is now 5-0. Matt Harvey took the loss.

San Francisco relied on the hitting of Nick Ahmed to pick up the win. The shortstop clubbed a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Giants on top, 5-3. For the game, Ahmed had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager John Gimbel said.

The victory makes San Francisco 11-8.
