Oakland Athletics pitcher Bert Wright was in top form, leading his team past the New York Yankees, 2-1. Wright, the winner, moves to 4-4. He threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 5 walks. Dave Baynes closed out the game, earning his 7th save.
The Yankees had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Athletics going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the three-time All-Star Tommy Hebert came to the plate. Hebert hit a run-scoring triple on a 1-1 fastball from New York hurler Cortez Salas. It was Hebert's 5th triple of the year.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Hebert. "And not try to do too much."
The Athletics now have a record of 18-24.
