The New York Mets got a stellar performance from pitcher Danny Valenzuela, who handcuffed the Washington offense en route to a win, 2-1, at Citi Field. New York reliever A.J. Ruhl got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Bobby Pudney was tagged with the loss. Earning his 4th save for New York was Bob Cooper.

Late in the game, designated hitter Mario Alvarado had a big at-bat for New York. In the bottom of the eighth, he hit a run-scoring single off Bobby Pudney. The play gave the Mets a 2-1 lead.

"I was hoping to make good contact," said Alvarado. "I wasn't trying to knock the snot out of it."

Washington is now 6-4.
