Bombers Beat Canterbury, 4-3
|
The Newcastle Bombers defeated the Canterbury Bulldogs, 4-3, in 12 innings. Frank Elmar led the way, going 4-for-5 for Newcastle. Kevin Firkins notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. His record now sits at 6-0. Matt Bendeich, credited with the save, is now 2 for 2 in save opportunities.
Newcastle used the timely hitting of Rafael Pichardo to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put the Bombers on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
After the game, Newcastle manager Silvio Dante applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
At 38-40, the Bombers find themselves in 6th place in the National League.
