Bombers Score Late, Upend Swans, 2-0
|
In a low-scoring clash between Newcastle and South Melbourne, pitcher Herb Bartholomew was a difference-maker. The right-hander earned accolades in the 2-0 win. Newcastle reliever Denis Kivell got the win, raising his record to 3-0. Fletch McIlwain was tagged with the loss. Bradford Thomson nailed down his 11th save.
Newcastle used a timely hit from Cal Sheldrake to get the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Bombers ahead, 1-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.
"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Bartholomew said.
Newcastle now has a record of 22-15 with the win.
