The Newcastle Bombers topped the Melbourne Demons, 5-2, in National League action at Newcastle Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of Newcastle pitcher Herb Bartholomew. Bradford Thomson closed it out for his 7th save. The win makes Newcastle 17-20.

Had Rowland Whiffin not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Whiffin hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Bombers.

"Enjoyed this one," Bartholomew told the Newcastle Daily News. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
