Newcastle rode a fine outing from starter Herb Bartholomew to victory over the Canberra Raiders at Newcastle Park. The final score was 3-2. Bradford Thomson, now 1-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 0 and walking 1. Newcastle, with the win, is 5-2.

Frank Elmar, who led the NL in stolen bases with 92 in 2016, won the game with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth. In the contest, the Newcastle third baseman was 2-5 with a double.

"If we keep winning the close games," Elmar said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."
