Down to Defeat Goes Pittsburgh, 8-3
|
The St. Louis Cardinals overcame a pretty good performance by Pittsburgh center fielder Josh McMillan, beating the Pirates, 8-3, at PNC Park. McMillan was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Tim Hackler came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in 2.2 innings. His record now stands at 8-5. The first-place Cardinals, at 91-62, lead the National League Central Division by 11½ games.
Phil Horton had a big 2-run double for the Cardinals in the top of the second inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a fastball from former first round draft pick Jon Rohrer and swatted a double to right. It was his 18th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cardinals ahead, 3-0.
Horton attributed the win to "a well-rounded effort by the whole team."
