Cincinnati got a terrific game from third baseman Pierre Johnson. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Portland, 9-6. Johnson went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Vic Mallery converted his 13th save in 14 tries. The Hops go to 23-38 with the win.

Portland took a 9-6 lead on Lobo Peña's 7th home run of the season. The grand slam home run came off Cincinnati pitcher James Doll in the bottom of the eighth.

"Winning is hard sometimes," said Hops manager Alberto Velasquez. "This one was nice to get."
