California got a valiant performance from pitcher Ralph Mayes, but it wasn't enough to beat the Minnesota Twins. Minnesota won the game, 3-1. Mayes threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball for the losing team. The Twins' win now puts them at 62-40.
The contest featured some late-game dramatics from Minnesota catcher Stanfield Reaves. In the top of the ninth inning, with one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, Reaves grounded out, driving in 1 run to help Minnesota seize the win.
"It was a good effort all around," said Reaves.
