The Atlanta Braves got a strong performance from pitcher Mal Smart, who stymied the Chicago offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Truist Park. Smart, the winner, moves to 12-6. He threw 5.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 3 walks. Eliot Le Bras earned the save, his 5th.
The Braves got a big hit from center fielder Phooka May. In the bottom of the fifth, May pounded a run-scoring double to center. His 28th double of the season put the Braves ahead, 3-0.
In postgame comments, Braves manager Pat Hitsman raved about Smart. "I always like our chances when Destiny takes the mound."
With the win, the Braves improved to 56-52.
