RiverDogs Turn Away Hot Rods, 1-0
|
In a low-scoring affair between the Charleston RiverDogs and the Bowling Green Hot Rods, pitcher Derek Piper was the difference between victory and defeat. The Charleston right-hander earned accolades in the 1-0 RiverDogs win. Piper, the winner, moves to 2-0. He threw 6 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 9 and giving up 1 walk. The RiverDogs have a winning streak of 4 games.
The Hot Rods had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the RiverDogs going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old shortstop Hunter Berg came to the plate. Berg hit a run-scoring double on a 1-1 fastball from Bowling Green hurler Elijah Mootz. It was Berg's 7th double of the year.
"It's Baseball 101," said Charleston manager Jim Salyers. "Fundamentals."
