Jeff Dechert, who is tied for 4th in the in complete games with 1, never let the Whitecaps get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his curveball, to pitch the Captains to a win, 2-0. Dechert, the winner, moves to 4-9. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up 1 walk. Sergio Flores finished the game for Lake County and earned his 8th save.
Lake County used the timely hitting of Joe Goodman to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Captains on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Clutch hitting plus clutch pitching usually equals a win," said Goodman.
Lake County is now 70-61. West Michigan is 43-88.
